Creator Card

A Payment Card Designed Around Creator Earnings

Creators often had to move LIVE earnings through external payout methods before they could use them. Creator Card introduced a lower-friction route from eligible earnings to a Visa debit card, with digital-wallet provisioning, card controls, and everyday payment utility.

00 · Project Overview

A debit card built around the way creators earn and spend

Creator Card connected eligible TikTok LIVE earnings to a Visa debit-card experience. The UK MVP was delivered through a Banking-as-a-Service model with Stripe and Visa. It added a lower-friction route for receiving, managing, and spending creator earnings while preserving existing bank and PayPal payout options.

Product position

Creator Card was designed around creator earnings rather than as a generic card proposition. The first priority was to reduce payout friction and make eligible earnings easier to use. Card controls, digital-wallet provisioning, and creator-relevant benefits extended that utility into everyday payment.

01 · Problem Definition

Creator earnings lost momentum at the final step

Before Creator Card, creators often moved earnings through bank accounts, PayPal, Payoneer, or other payout routes before the money became available for use. Fees, settlement time, and fragmented status information made that final stage feel detached from the work that generated the income.

Issue 01

Payout cost

Fee structures varied by method and could erode net earnings, particularly for creators who transferred funds frequently.

Issue 02

Time to access funds

Creators had to wait for processing and settlement before earnings could support equipment, promotion, or everyday expenses.

Opportunity 03

Creator relevance

Generic payout methods provided utility but did not connect financial management to the creator’s identity, tools, or growth journey.

Scope clarification: Creator Card did not remove or replace existing payout methods. It introduced an additional debit-card route and allowed creators to choose the method appropriate to their needs.
02 · Market and Product Research

Creators expected consumer-grade finance, not a platform-issued utility card

The benchmark started with Revolut, Monzo, Apple Card, Wise, and Up because creators compared financial products with the apps they already used. Karat and OTH were then reviewed to understand how creator identity, influence, and ecosystem relationships could translate into relevant financial value.

Application

Virtual card first

Reuse verified context where permitted, collect delivery details only when required, and separate virtual activation from physical-card fulfilment.

Card home

Explain money movement

Balance, inflow and outflow, transaction state, fees, card controls, and dispute routes need greater clarity than a generic creator balance page.

Identity

Personalisation with purpose

Card design and creator-specific benefits can support ownership, but they should follow reliable payments and account controls.

Consumer finance benchmark

Reduce application friction without weakening verification

Leading debit-card experiences treated the virtual card as an activation journey and delayed physical-card information until fulfilment. The implication for Creator Card was to reuse TikTok identity and earnings context only where regulation and partner controls allowed, while keeping required consent and KYC explicit.

Creator finance benchmark

Creator value should come from relevant context

Karat demonstrated the value of creator-specific financial services and community distribution. OTH illustrated how social identity and brand relationships could shape access. Creator Card did not copy either model; the transferable insight was to connect financial utility to creator workflows and TikTok ecosystem context.

Concept comparison with 12 UK creators

Cashback did not strengthen application intent

This was a qualitative concept comparison, not a statistically powered A/B experiment. Across the interview sample, the version with 0.7% TikTok Shop cashback did not improve stated application intent. Fee-free access to eligible earnings, lower transfer cost, and account security were more important.

Concept A included 0.7% TikTok Shop cashback.

Concept B removed cashback and retained the core earnings proposition.
03 · Design Goals

Balance creator adoption, financial trust, and programme sustainability

The product was evaluated as an earnings and payment system rather than by card issuance alone. The measurement framework therefore combined transaction volume, creator adoption, income penetration, customer-risk signals, and unit economics.

Total payment volume

Measure real money movement across earnings credited to the card, card spend, and supported transfers.

Creator adoption and income penetration

Track both the number of creators using the card and the share of eligible creator earnings routed to it.

Trust guardrails

Monitor complaints, disputes, account-security issues, and material changes in creator behaviour.

Positive programme margin

Ensure interchange and permitted service revenue can support programme and operational costs.

Principle 01

Lower-friction access to earnings

Make eligible LIVE earnings available through a transparent card route while retaining other payout choices.

Principle 02

Everyday payment utility

Support external Visa acceptance and digital-wallet provisioning, not only payment within TikTok.

Principle 03

Creator identity after trust

Use card personalisation and relevant benefits to build ownership once essential financial information and controls are clear.

04 · Design Process

Research changed the value proposition and the delivery sequence

We conducted in-person and remote depth interviews with 12 UK creators, ranging from approximately 11,000 to 1.3 million followers. The study tested the product proposition, account model, benefit hierarchy, and critical onboarding decisions. Findings are directional because of the sample size.

Security before savings

Creators were concerned about access to card funds if their TikTok account was restricted or compromised. The MVP therefore required clear card security controls and a support route that did not depend on one in-app entry point.

A debit-led proposition

All 12 participants primarily used debit cards, and several expressed strong concern about credit products. This evidence supported a debit-card MVP rather than a credit-led roadmap.

Cashback was not a decision driver

Adding 0.7% TikTok Shop cashback did not improve stated application intent in the concept comparison. It was removed from the core proposition to avoid setting an expectation the benefit could not meet.

Digital and physical preferences differed

The sample was divided between mobile-wallet-first and physical-card-first behaviour. The MVP remained virtual-card first, while physical issuance and fulfilment were treated as a distinct product phase.

Research-led iteration

Remove avoidable blockers and disclose costs before commitment

RemoveEstimated-income and tax fields that were not required for the agreed MVP compliance route.
DiscloseOutbound transfer fees on the proposition screen before account activation.
ClarifyWhether the card displays a legal name or creator handle, and how each is used.
ConfigureAllow creators to choose how much eligible LIVE income is routed to the card.
Core design challenge
The experience needed to combine functional value—lower-friction access to earnings, transparent fees, and reliable controls—with creator relevance that made the card feel intentionally designed for this audience.
Required KYC, consent, and issuer checks remained explicit. Reusing existing TikTok information did not mean bypassing verification; it meant avoiding duplicate collection where programme partners confirmed it was unnecessary.
Decision 01
Start with access to earnings, not rewards
The MVP addressed payout cost, timing, and balance availability before adding broader lifestyle benefits. This gave the card a recurring and relevant source of funds from the outset.
Decision 02
Use a debit card rather than a closed wallet
Visa acceptance and Apple Pay or Google Pay provisioning allowed creators to use earnings both within TikTok Shop and at external merchants.
Decision 03
Introduce ownership within a compliant flow
Card design selection and PIN setup created moments of personal ownership without hiding agreements, identity checks, fees, or account responsibilities.
05 · Final Design

A complete journey from earnings discovery to everyday payment

The final design covered five connected scenarios: discovering the card in an earnings context, activating the account, moving and managing money, provisioning the card to a digital wallet, and using it for online or in-store payment.

01
Entry
Introduce the card where creators already manage earnings.
02
Activation

03
Card hub
Manage balance, transfers, card controls, transactions, and disputes.
04
Wallet provisioning

05
Daily use

Scenario 01 · Entry

Use earnings tasks as the product’s entry points

Creator Card appeared where creators already reviewed money: Creator Balance, LIVE rewards, withdrawal, and payout-method selection. Each entry explained the relevant advantage before asking the creator to begin KYC.

Scenario 02 · Activation

Reuse context while keeping verification explicit

The flow reused eligible TikTok identity, contact, and earnings context where permitted. Agreements, phone verification, KYC, card selection, and PIN setup remained clear, with fees disclosed before commitment.

Scenario 03 · Money Movement and Management

Scenario 04 · Wallet Provisioning

Support the routes customers already use to add a card

Provisioning was designed across the Creator Card home, Apple Wallet, the TikTok app extension, Apple Watch, and Google Wallet. This reduced dependence on a single in-app button and supported both iOS and Android payment habits.

Scenario 05 · Daily Use

Use creator earnings within TikTok and beyond it

The card supports TikTok Shop checkout, external online commerce, and in-store payment through the card network or a provisioned digital wallet. This allowed post-launch data to distinguish card issuance from genuine payment use.

06 · Results and Impact

Early behaviour indicated use beyond card issuance

Absolute commercial values are confidential, so the results are directional and desensitised. They describe early post-launch behaviour within the eligible cohort and do not attribute every outcome to design alone.

Above plan
Cards issued
Issuance remained above the launch forecast during the early period.
Adoption signal
Above forecast
Funded-card spend adoption
A greater share of funded creators made a card purchase than forecast.
Payment utility
Growing
Eligible earnings credited
Cumulative funds routed to Creator Card increased after launch.
Real money movement
Repeat use
Purchase transactions
Transaction behaviour extended beyond a single activation purchase.
Emerging habit
Off-platform
External merchant activity
Purchases outside TikTok demonstrated broader card-network utility.
Everyday use
Interpretation
Issuance alone would not establish product value. The combination of funded balances, repeat transactions, and external-merchant use provided stronger evidence that creators were treating the product as a payment card rather than only as a payout destination.
07 · Reflection

What the project changed in my practice

01
Forecasts are assumptions, not product boundaries
Early spend adoption exceeded the conservative forecast. The lesson was not that every optimistic scenario is correct, but that product decisions should remain testable and responsive to observed behaviour.
02
Financial trust precedes creator expression
Card colour and personalisation supported ownership, but security controls, fee disclosure, transaction clarity, and access to support determined whether the experience felt credible.
03
Partner ownership is part of interaction design
TikTok, Stripe, Visa, LIVE, TikTok Shop, and PIPO each owned different data, controls, and liabilities. Mapping those boundaries early prevented apparently simple screens from failing at implementation or support.
04
A payout destination can become an everyday card
External-merchant and repeat-use behaviour showed that creators valued broader payment utility. The product position therefore needed to support both earnings access and daily financial management without overstating the role of ecosystem benefits.

01 · Problem Definition

Competitive landscape: creator finance needs consumer-grade UX

The benchmark uses a UX audit lens: what best-in-class looks like, and what we should avoid. It starts from consumer financial products, not gig-worker cards. Creators may behave like small businesses, but they compare the experience against consumer-grade apps such as Revolut, Apple Card, Wise, Monzo, and Up.

Revolut / Monzo / Apple Card / Wise:

The strongest pattern is virtual-card first: consumer competitors require almost no extra information for virtual debit cards, and usually collect address only when a physical card is delivered. Revolut and Monzo also turn card colors, labels, and card types into lightweight moments of personalisation.

Karat:

Karat is not only about giving creators a card. It turns creators into connectors: people who know other creators, carry social trust, and spread products through influence. Creator investors, creator stories, custom cards, and creator-specific services turn customers into distribution.

Creator Card home should not be only balance plus recent transactions. Even within TUX, the financial use case needs stronger inflow/outflow, transaction states, categories, filters, and card controls. Later releases can translate LIVE income, TTS GMV, equipment spend, and Promote spend into creator-specific insights.

Roadmap Split
Make the MVP clear, then make it intelligent.
Many cool features belong to later releases: insights, rewards, themes, physical-card waitlists, and delightful loaders. Revolut gets experience control by owning more infrastructure, while Creator Card MVP has KYC, issuance, and compliance vendor constraints, so trust, explainability, and wallet activation must be solved first.
04  ·  Social Finance

OTH shows a non-conventional creator-finance proposition: application relies on social media handles, follower count, and posting behavior instead of banking details. Spending is unlocked through content actions at participating businesses, proving that influence can become access.

Creator Card should not copy OTH's barter model directly, but it can borrow the ecosystem logic: TikTok already knows handles, content performance, LIVE income, and TTS GMV, which can later become campaign access, merchant benefits, card surfaces, Promote credit, or creator-tool bundles.

Competitive Synthesis
Final call: meet consumer-finance standards first, then grow TikTok creator value.
The corrected boundary is sharper: virtual-card first, no repeated data collection; creator-relevant benefits, not generic bundles; a transaction home that explains money movement; stronger personalisation than normal bank cards; creator value from the TikTok ecosystem, not a copied credit or gig-worker card model.
03 · Design Goals

Key Research Findings
Security beats savings: "What happens to my money if TikTok bans me?"
We initially expected fee-free withdrawals to be the primary proposition, but creators were more concerned about protecting and accessing card funds if their TikTok account was restricted or compromised. This led us to include clear card security controls and support routes that did not depend on a single in-app entry point in the MVP.
Debit only — credit cards are a dealbreaker
Interviewed creators generally use debit as primary — and exhibited strong negative reactions to any mention of credit. When we hinted the card might become a credit product, reactions ranged from neutral rejection to strong refusal. Clear signal: UK MVP must be a debit card.
Internal cashback falls flat — cashback rate disappoints
We compared concepts with and without TikTok Shop cashback during qualitative interviews. Among creators who expressed application intent, cashback did not change their stated decision; the 0.7% rate also fell below some expectations. The finding indicated that internal cashback should not lead the MVP proposition.
Convenience drives spend — Apple Pay + physical card are both needed
Creators split almost 50/50 between phone-wallet-first and physical-card-first. Neither group would compromise. Creator Card must support both Apple/Google Pay and a physical card — missing either creates significant drop-off risk.
Qualitative Concept Comparison: Cashback Did Not Change Stated Application Intent
Creator Card value prop screen with TikTok Shop cashback
含 0.7% TikTok Shop 返现
With 0.7% TikTok Shop cashback
Creator Card welcome screen without cashback
Without cashback, core perks only
Result: All creators who said they'd sign up did so consistently under both versions — driven by free withdrawals and lower transfer fees, not cashback. The 0.7% cashback rate was below creators' psychological threshold and created negative sentiment. Cashback was removed as a core KSP from all subsequent designs.

I would definitely get the card because it is exclusive and it doesn't take any fees from me. The cashback does not mean anything to me.

Research-Driven Iteration: Onboarding Before vs. After
Before Research
Required "estimated monthly income" field — more than half of creators refused to fill it due to low TikTok trust, causing drop-off
Required Tax Identification Number (TIN) — creators didn't have it on hand and couldn't proceed
No upfront disclosure that withdrawing from the card incurs fees — creators felt misled upon discovery, harming retention
No clarity on whether card shows legal name or TikTok handle — created clear user confusion
After Research
Removed both critical blockers (estimated income + TIN) — significantly improved completion rate
Proactively disclosed outbound transfer fees on the value prop screen — set expectations before commitment
Added automatic percentage-based earning allocation — let creators route a custom share of daily LIVE income to the card
Clarified card shows TikTok handle; added account-independent card management as a key safety guarantee
05 · Final Design

Final design: a scenario-based Creator Card experience

The final design is not a single application page. It is a full journey across entry, activation, money movement, daily card management, and wallet provisioning, covering trust building, low-friction onboarding, withdrawal, transfer, card controls, transaction management, and Apple Pay / Google Pay add paths.

Scenario 01 · Entry

Entry: not one CTA, but a set of income-task touchpoints

Creator Card entry points sit where creators are already thinking about money: balance, banner, LIVE rewards, withdrawal, and payout method selection. Each entry explains why Creator Card is faster, cheaper, and easier in that task context.

Scenario 02 · Activation

Activation: from financial application to creator eligibility

The flow reuses TikTok identity, phone, and earnings context wherever possible, asking for agreement, verification, KYC, and PIN only when necessary. Card design selection adds an ownership moment inside the compliance flow.

Scenario 03 · Money Movement & Management

Card management: withdrawals, transfers, controls, and transactions in one hub

After activation, the card home is more than a balance page. It supports the core money tasks creators need: moving LIVE earnings into the card, transferring out to bank or PayPal, understanding fees and settlement states, controlling card safety, and managing transactions, statements, and disputes.

Scenario 04 · Wallet Provisioning

Wallet add: Apple Pay / Google Pay across multiple entry points

For a virtual card to become a daily payment tool, provisioning cannot rely on one button alone. Apple Pay supports four add paths: from the Creator Card home, directly inside Apple Wallet, through the TT App extension, and from Apple Watch wallet settings. Google Pay covers two core paths: adding from the Creator Card home and manually entering card details in Google Wallet.

Scenario 05 · Daily Use

Daily use: from TikTok income to real-world spending

The final design needs creators to feel that this is their income, their card, and their identity. Daily use is split into online and offline contexts: online covers TikTok Shop binding and external commerce such as Amazon, while offline supports in-store payment through Apple/Google Pay or Visa.

07 · Reflection
